Belarus may face agricultural goods shortage due to heat


Climatologists are convinced that climate changes are to have greatest impact on agricultural industry of the country.

"Global changes of the climate influence agriculture development of Belarus most," stated the head of the climate department of the Republican HydroMetCentre of Alena Kamarouskaya at the press-conference on Wednesday, Interfax-Zapad reports.

As said by her, in the conditions of changing climate "heat supply of agricultural plants has grown, agro-climatic regions in the country have moved 60-150 kilometres to the north". Besides, as said by the head of the department, as a result of climate changes, "the northern agro climatic zone in Belarus has split in fact, and a new one has emerged in the south, which reminds Ukrainian Polesye".

Kamarouskaya noted that climate changes in general are favourable for grain crops ripening, but improve ripening conditions for potatoes, cabbage, flax. The expert has also stressed that climate changes have resulted in increase of the number of rainless days in the year. In Belarus in general the amount of precipitations has dropped.

Speaking about positive moments of the climate change, A. Kamatouskaya informed that they are related to fuel and energy sector of the country. "The heating period in the cold season has decreased considerably," she said. At the same time, the expert notes that "expenses for air conditioning in summer are growing".
