Russian generals receive Belarusian medals for Zapad-2009

Alyaksandr Lukashenka awarded top officers of the Russian Armed Forces with Order of People's Friendship.

As Interfax reports referring to Lukashenka's press service, the awards were given to Russian general officers.

"The award has been conferred on Valery Gerasimov, commander of the troops of the Moscow military district of the Armed Forces of Russia; Nikolai Makarov, head of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia– First Deputy Minister of Defense of Russia; Sergei Surovikin, head of staff – first deputy commander of the troops of the Volga-Urals military district of the Armed Forces of Russia; Sergei Yudin, commander of the 20th Guards Army of the Moscow military district of the Armed Forces of Russia," the press service reports.

It should be noticed that these officers took part in organizing and holding the Zapad-2009 military training.

As charter97.org website has already reported, in 2009, Russia and Belarus held the Zapad-2009 military exercises in Belarus. British Telegraph with a reference to Polish magazine Wprost wrote that during recent joint Belarusian-Russian military drills Zapad-2009, an amphibious landing on the Polish coast and the firing of nuclear weapons were simulated.

Western countries expressed their concern about the military exercise. In respond, NATO is going to organize drill in the Baltic States in the nearest future.
