Representatives of the campaign "Human Rights Defenders for Free Elections" Uladzimir Labkovich and Dmitry Salauyou were detained at the "Kamenny Loh" border checkpoint tonight.
Human rights defenders who were returning from Vilnius to Minsk had instruction manuals for short-term observers which were detained by Ashmyany Customs officers, "Human Rights Defenders for Free Elections" informs.
Labkovich and Salauyou were kept for about 5 hours at the border. Customs officers seized from them 115 copies of the manuals containing information for the work of observers at polling stations. Human rights activists say that customs officials consulted with the KGB all the time, being afraid to make a decision of their own - to detain or let them go.
- We personally heard how customs officers reported that the printed materials did not contain any illegal information, and they were to pass, but the officers were unable to let them pass without the consent of the KGB, - Labkovich said.
