Supreme Court does not “give opinion on prospects” for capital punishment in Belarus

Death penalty and life sentence are used in isolated cases in Belarus, the Supreme Court believes.

It has been said to journalists in Minsk by the deputy chairman of the Supreme Court of Belarus Valery Kalinkavich, Interfax-Zapad reports.

"Death penalty and life sentence are exceptional measures of punishment, and they are used in Belarus only in exceptional cases," V. Kalinkavich said.

"Death penalty and life sentence are named exceptional measures of punishment in the Criminal Code of Belarus," he said. As said by the deputy chairman of the Supreme Court, "in 2010 3 persons were sentenced to capital punishment in Belarus, and less then 10 persons have been sentenced to the life sentence."

Answering the question about prospects of imposing moratorium on capital punishment in Belarus, Kalinkavich noted that the Supreme Court "does not give opinion on these prospects."
